How to Play

Those of you new to the apocalyptic 5K known as The Running Dead, here is what you need to know to survive or thrive…

Each participant has the choice to be either a runner or walker making their way through the city unharmed from the living dead or a zombie on the lookout for fast food, namely survivors running for their lives, or casual dining of those walking on the streets.

The zombies are encouraged to show up two hours before the race to register or sign in and be placed in designated areas along the route.

Every runner/walker will be provided a belt with three flags attached to wear around their waist, if they choose to do so. You can run/walk without health flags and the Zombies will grant you safe passage. Bloodied arrows painted along the streets will guide the runners/walkers to the finish line.

As the runners/walkers make their way through the city, the zombies will jump out or be in the middle of the road to grab the flags from their belt. It’s up to the runners/walkers to dodge and weave their way to the finish line.

After the last walker passes each zombie, the zombie will join the horde of the other undead through the city and to the finish line where the runners will have their times recorded and remaining flags counted, and the zombies will have their collected flags counted.

RULES FOR ZOMBIES

All You Zombies…

    1. Keep the sticker given to you at registration on you at all times during the race and the events that follow.
    2. Zombies must be 18 years of age or older. Ages 14 to 17 are required to have an authorization form singed by a parent or guardian. Participants 13 and younger must be accompanied by a parent and guardian at all times, which means the parent/guardian must also register as a zombie.
    3. Groups of zombies with a theme are encouraged to participate as they can win a prize for creativity.
    4. Your makeup and outfit should be frightfully creative, but your footwear must be adequate.
    5. After you register, you will be placed at a certain point along the route and will be given further instructions.
    6. As a zombie, your mission is to act as an Attacker or a Blocker. The Attackers can move from a designated spot on the side of the route onto the route when runners approach. The Blockers stand in one spot in front of the oncoming runners and can only move their torsos and arms to grab the flags; a Blocker cannot move from their designated spot.
    7. You are not allowed to touch the runners, and the runners are not allowed touch you. Instead, a zombie “attack” is you reaching for one of the flags attached to the runners as they pass you. The runner’s task is to dodge you and not push or block you or cover their flags from you.
    8. Once the last walker passes, join your fellow zombies in a roaming zombie horde and complete the route.
    9. Aggressive behavior will not be tolerated, and you will be asked to immediately leave the course if observed or reported by participants, staff or volunteers.
    10. Pets are not allowed.
    11. No outside food and drinks will be allowed. Something on the lines of an energy bar and a bottle of water is fine, but bringing a meal or a picnic is going over the line. Water will be given out and food/drink vendors will be available.
    12. Outside alcohol or any drug use will not be tolerated and will lead to ejection and possible prosecution.
    13. No weapons, play weapons, fire, sharp objects or gear considered dangerous by the organizers will be allowed. We’re going by “Night of the Living Dead” rules, so the zombies haven’t figured out how to use weapons.
    14. Profanity will not be tolerated, especially when all you can do is moan.
    15. A yet undetermined number of zombies with the most flags will win a prize. Hold on to your flags until an event official collects and counts your flags. If an event official doesn’t count your flags, your number won’t be recorded.
    16. Only zombies are permitted to take part in the Zombie Olympics. There will be a limited number of participants for some of the Zombie Olympic events, so sign up early at registration! Prizes will be given to winners. More details to come.
    17. Any verbal or written instruction by organizers or police must be strictly followed at all times.
    18. A waiver and publicity release form will be signed by all participants at registration.
